Nation building 101: lessons from Singapore

Singapore's successes are largely due to the intense pragmatism of its founding father Lee Kuan Yew. It is no secret that the government is involved in basically all aspects of society. More than 50 years after the birth of Singapore, blindly trusting the state is something the younger generation of Singaporeans are not willing to do without question. Lee has been dead nearly a year. The government can no longer rely on his iron grip over the nation.

How Donald Trump has used social media to outplay his opponents

No other candidate uses new media as well as Trump. With his rallies live-streamed through Youtube and his brutally authentic Twitter feed, he is a ‘disruptive technology’ in the world of political campaigning. The angst he suffered making his decision is clear. Though Cameron has in the past shown little capacity for rehabilitating those who have crossed him, Gove deserves to be forgiven and respected for choosing principles over friendship.

How the Bronx bounched back

Four decades ago, the Bronx was literally burning as crime rates (including arson) soared. However, a neighbourhood renaissance began under Mayor Ed Koch, followed by the revolution in policing and public safety under Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Now, unlike other American cities that have never recovered from their mid-20th century peak, the Bronx is boasting a higher population and business rate than ever before.
